Antminer is Bitmain’s ASIC product line, where the letter identifies the algorithm and the number identifies the generation.

Learn the badge and you’ll never buy the wrong box. S is SHA-256 — Bitcoin flagships. T is Bitcoin too, cheaper per unit, thirstier per terahash. L is Scrypt — Litecoin with Dogecoin merge-mined alongside. E is Ethash. Z is Equihash. KS/KA are Kaspa and Kadena. Suffixes describe cooling and density: Hyd is hydro, XP is upgraded silicon, Imm is immersion, U3 is rack-native.

The number is the generation: 9 → 17 → 19 → 21 → 23. Each step roughly halves J/TH. An S9 burns ~98 J/TH; an S23 Hyd burns 9.5 J/TH.

Here’s where Canada breaks the usual rule. Everywhere else, the advice is “expensive power demands new generations.” In Québec at $0.05/kWh or on Alberta flared gas at effectively pennies, older generations still clear their electricity cost — which means Canadian buyers can scale on quantity instead of paying up for the newest silicon. The Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U is a hydro-cooled Bitcoin miner in a 3U rack format delivering 1.16 PH/s (1,160 TH/s) at 11,020 W — an efficiency of 9.5 J/TH.

Read that again: 1.16 petahash out of a chassis measuring 900 × 486 × 132 mm. A single 3U module does the work of roughly 86 Antminer S9s while drawing less than a quarter of the power those 86 machines would demand.

That density is the entire point of the format. This isn’t a machine you place — it’s a module you slide in. It’s built for data-centre architecture: ANTRACK racks, ANTSPACE containers, closed water loops with a dry cooler outside.

And this is where Canada’s climate becomes a genuine balance-sheet item. A dry cooler rejecting heat into −20 °C Manitoba air does its job at a fraction of the fan power it needs in a warm climate. The same hardware simply costs less to run here.

The Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd 3U is the rack-mounted, water-cooled version of the S23 — 1.16 PH/s in a 3U chassis at 9.5 J/TH, built to be installed into infrastructure rather than plugged into a wall.

The section above covered the numbers. This one covers what actually happens when one arrives on a pallet in Alberta, because the specification sheet is the easy part.

You need a loop before you need a miner. A closed water circuit, a dry cooler sized for your heat load, circulation pumps with redundancy, and coolant. Bitmain sells antifreeze rated to −40 °C and −50 °C, and in most of Canada you want the −50 °C. Pure water will freeze in your lines in February and split them.

You need the floor. 11 kW per module sounds abstract until you’re racking twelve of them. Bitmain’s own ANTSPACE siting guidance calls for ground capable of carrying at least 45 t and levelness within ±1° — that’s a concrete pad, not a shop floor.

You need three-phase. 380–480 V, and a service drop that can carry it. In rural Canada that conversation with the utility takes months, not weeks. Start it before you order hardware.

And you need cold-start discipline. Below 20 °C coolant temperature, the miners should not be started until a PTC heater brings the loop up. ANTSPACE containers include one. A self-built loop needs you to add it.

None of this is a reason not to buy. It’s the reason Canadian operators who do this properly end up with the lowest cost per terahash on the continent — cheap hydro power and a dry cooler rejecting heat into −20 °C air is a combination almost nobody else can buy.

The Antminer S9 is Bitmain’s 2016 Bitcoin miner — 13.5 TH/s at roughly 1,320 W on 16nm BM1387 chips.

The S9 is mining’s indestructible classic. It gets written off every year and keeps humming in garages across five continents. At $320.88 it’s the only Bitcoin miner you can make mistakes on without regretting the purchase.

Everywhere else in the world, we tell buyers the S9’s 98 J/TH is a death sentence. In Canada that sentence gets commuted. At Québec residential rates near $0.07/kWh, an S9 draws about $67 a month in electricity. On a farm running Alberta flared gas or a Manitoba industrial contract, it’s less. This is one of the few markets on earth where an S9 fleet can still clear its power bill.

There’s a second Canadian angle that isn’t a joke: an S9 is a 1.3 kW space heater that pays you. Plenty of owners in cold provinces run them in workshops, garages and outbuildings from October to April and count the heat as part of the return. Six months of the year, the “waste” isn’t waste.

The S19 is Bitmain’s 2020 Bitcoin generation, spanning roughly 90 to 151 TH/s at 21–34 J/TH.

The S19 moved mining from the shed to the spreadsheet. Publicly traded miners built entire balance sheets on this model, which is why so many are in circulation today.

Six years on it holds one clear position: the cheapest machine that still seriously counts. Not the most efficient — the S21 took that — but the lowest entry price for hashrate that actually earns.

For Canadian buyers the S19 sits in a genuinely comfortable spot. At $0.05–0.08/kWh, an S19j Pro at 29.5 J/TH clears its power cost with room to spare — the same machine that struggles in Germany or the Netherlands. The Antminer S21 is Bitmain’s 2023 generation — around 200 TH/s at approximately 3,500 W, or about 17.5 J/TH.

The S21 is the machine that makes mining work in expensive-power markets. Canada isn’t one of those, which changes the question entirely: here, you don’t buy an S21 to survive your electricity bill — you buy it because you’re constrained by amps, not dollars.

That’s the real Canadian bottleneck. Hydro-Québec allocates mining load. A rural service drop gives you what it gives you. Most Canadian operations hit a hard ceiling on available power long before they hit a ceiling on capital. When your limit is kilowatts, the only way to grow is more terahash per kilowatt — and that’s the S21’s entire argument.

Do the math on a 50 kW service: fourteen S21s at 3,500 W each gives you 2,800 TH/s. Thirty-seven S9s at 1,320 W fills the same panel for 500 TH/s. Same power, five and a half times the output.

The Antminer L3 / L3+ is Bitmain’s 2017 Scrypt miner — 504 MH/s at about 800 W — mining Litecoin with Dogecoin merge-mined at no extra power cost.

The L3+ is the folk hero of Dogecoin mining. Small, comparatively quiet for an ASIC, and it pays in two coins for one computation: Litecoin as the primary, Dogecoin as the bonus. In 2017 that felt like magic.

In 2026 an honest shop has to say it plainly. At roughly 1.6 J/MH, the L3+ can’t compete with the current L-series on efficiency. We stock it at $189.88 because on Canadian power that inefficiency is survivable — and because at that price it is the cheapest way into Scrypt that exists.

But hold on to why you searched for it, because that instinct is sound. Scrypt’s two-coin payout is genuine diversification — your revenue stops depending entirely on the Bitcoin chart.
